As long as the media and average people pretend that ‘both sides do it’ and decide that it’s okay for self-described ‘patriots’ to rabidly hate President Obama, Democrats, and the federal government — and as long as everyone continues to look the other way when right-wing attitudes manifest themselves publicly, in the form of open racism and / or violent rhetoric, we’ll be under threat as a society and a functioning country.
Ask yourself if the fictional right-wing, Fox “News” created, tea party celebrated ‘creeping Sharia law’ is more of a threat to our country than the very real and ongoing use of the Republican Party’s Southern Strategy. Recall Sarah Palin’s creative ‘sniper rifle symbols’ on Democratic U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the aftermath. Think of Breitbart-protégé James O’Keefe and his ‘pimp costume’ and ACORN and the fictional Democratic voter fraud issue (as we’ve learned, Mitt Romney, the presumed GOP presidential candidate, actually committed voter fraud).
Or look at the most recent example of our politically correct, both sides do it, national discourse:
The ‘outrage’ for the right was something said by a CNN commentator about a candidate’s wife and was, in fact, entirely true. The ‘outrage’ for the left, which should be an outrage for the entire country, was a thinly-veiled threat against the life of our sitting president, for purposes of demonstrating the speaker’s Southern Strategy bona fides in front of an NRA crowd. With our history of political assassinations and attempted assassinations, should we ever take such rhetoric lightly?
While you think about which outrage received the most national attention and why, you might also ask yourself how your silence on such matters not only contributes to the escalation of ignorance in our national discourse, but encourages some Beck- or Palin-inspired Manchurian candidate to prove his ‘Super Patriotism’ in the form of action. Sort of like this guy, who has been happily expressing his right-wing ideals in court all last week:
[Anders Behring Breivik] identified as his enemy the “cultural Marxists” who he said had destroyed Norway by using it as “a dumping ground for the surplus births of the third world”. Claiming Norwegians would be a minority in their own capital “within five years”, he blamed liberal politicians for bringing about Norway’s demise with “feminism, quotas … transforming the church, schools”.
The 69 people, many of them teenagers, who died on the island of Utøya when he opened fire on the youth camp of the ruling Labour party were “not innocent”, he claimed.
“They were not innocent, non-political children; these were young people who worked to actively uphold multicultural values. Many people had leading positions in the leading Labour party youth wing,” he said, going on to compare the Labour party’s youth wing (AUF) with the Hitler Youth.
Crump said it was not clear that Martin threw the first punch but, argued that even if he did, Zimmerman’s actions launched the entire sequence of events. “Trayvon Martin had every right to stand his ground,” Crump said. “We believe that Trayvon went to his grave not knowing who this strange man was that was approaching and confronting him.”
via: The Daily Beast
If 17-year-old Trayvon didn’t have the right to stand HIS ground, defend himself from an ADULT MALE STRANGER who was approaching HIM, who began menacing him, a stranger with a gun who actually shot HIM to death within a few minutes of their meeting, WHO DOES?
The ethic of Capitalism: everything is a commodity to be exploited, including human beings and the natural world.
Partial transcript of the beginning:
CH: Unfettered or unregulated capitalism is about societies that cannibalize themselves. When capitalism is the dominant ideology, and as Marx understood it’s a revolutionary ideology, it turns everything into a commodity, including human beings. And of course natural reasouces. And it exploits these commodities until they are exhausted and they are destroyed. And that’s precisely what has happened. We have allowed all of the restraints, which were never heavy enough, on the capitalist system to be lifted. And built into capitalism is a self-destructive quality, a form of self annihlation. And that’s what we are undergoing at this moment. It’s a form of collective suicide, in a way, because the ramifications of this economic collapse are going to be played out far beyond the economic sphere. It’s going to deeply disrupt the social, cultural, as well as the economic life of ordinary Americans.
MM: And yet they’re trying to fix the problem with capitalism.
CH: Yes, well of course that is what’s so tragic: they’re trying to sustain an unsustainable system.
Watch all 9 minutes — it’s very good.
The untimely death of the great Whitney Houston cannot but provoke intense sadness. Fame can be like sunlight through a magnifying glass whose burning pain sometimes only drugs and then death seem to relieve. […] And then you read one segment of Fox News viewers’ comments and you feel, like Charles Johnson, physically ill.
Those commenters represent everything that lives underneath the modern Republican Party’s ‘big tent.’ And if you vote GOP, you’re going to have to acknowledge that you live there with them.
SEAFORD, N.Y. (AP) – An off-duty federal agent who died after intervening in a pharmacy robbery on New York’s Long Island was likely shot by a retired police officer who responded, a law enforcement official said Tuesday
ATF agent John Capano, 51, was shot Saturday in Seaford while struggling with a suspect during a robbery for prescription painkillers and cash at a small family pharmacy. Capano was a customer and followed the suspect, who was later shot and killed, as he tried to flee.
A retired Nassau County police lieutenant who runs a nearby deli and an off-duty New York City police officer in the deli ran to the scene and saw the skirmish between Capano and the suspect, later identified as James McGoey, 43, of Hampton Bays.
The law enforcement official said it is believed the retired Nassau officer shot Capano during the skirmish. The NYPD officer shot the suspect.
The official is familiar with the investigation but not authorized to release information and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. A Nassau County police spokesman declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
The shooting appears to be the second so-called friendly fire in Nassau County in 2011. In March, an officer with the MTA Police shot and killed a Nassau police officer in plainclothes in Massapequa Park.
Everyone needs to carry. We’d all be safer!
Very moving… here’s hoping the human race can do better in the future — or that it can even survive itself.
Wow. America is a Christian nation? Tell me another one:
Family and friends were stunned by the loss of a West Virginia man who died while shopping on Black Friday as fellow bargain hunters reportedly walked around — and even over — the man’s body.
Family members told WSAZ-TV that 61-year-old Walter Vance of Logan County, W. Va., had become ill and collapsed while shopping for Christmas decorations inside Target in South Charleston. He later died after being taken to the hospital, family said.
Witnesses told the NBC News affiliate in Charleston, W. Wa., that shoppers walked around and even over Vance’s body.
Can you imagine walking by, around, or OVER someone who had collapsed to the floor, clearly in distress? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
“I walked over to the West Wing to say goodbye to members of the staff who had served President Ford so well,” Betty Ford, now 90, recalled in a written remembrance she sent from her home in Rancho Mirage, California, where she and her husband moved after they left Washington. “On the way back to the family quarters I passed by the empty Cabinet Room and thought, ‘You know, I’ve always wanted to dance on the Cabinet Room table.’…
Kennerly says he does not know why Betty Ford danced on the table, but he has a guess. “Very few women have had a seat at that table,” he says. “I bet you could count them on one hand at that point, and knowing her support for the Equal Rights Amendment”—she endorsed it—”she was tap-dancing in the middle of this male bastion. She was storming the walls of the gray suits and gray-haired eminences.”
“Justice was done. And I think that anyone who would question that the perpetrator of mass murder on American soil didn’t deserve what he got needs to have their head examined.” — President Obama
It’s a little reassuring that 8 out of 10 people surveyed do not need their heads examined.
Body of Contractor Killed in Aberdeen Proving Grounds Explosion will be flown back to his native India Monday. ATF is investigating. (Emphasis mine):
As the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives continues investigating the explosion at Aberdeen Proving Ground last Saturday that killed contractor Dr. Nanaj Bhamare, a friend of the worker has told Patch that Bhamare’s body will be flown back to India for burial.
[…] “They also requested our assistance due to the complexity of the explosives, fire scene,” [Clare A. Weber, a representative from the ATF field office in Baltimore] said of APG. “In addition to the explosion, then subsequent fire, the scene contained chem, bio-hazards as well as bloodborne pathogens, which ATF has better capabilities to handle.”
The explosion and subsequent fire happened yesterday about 3:00 PM EST at a lab in the Edgewood area of the installation — specifically the Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense laboratory. No one else was injured. Bhamare was a subcontractor to Battelle under an Army contract, and had been working at APG for only a couple of months.
It makes you wonder.
Homicide victim John P. Wheeler III, a former Pentagon official and presidential aide whose body was discovered Dec. 31 in a Wilmington landfill, was beaten to death in an assault, the Delaware medical examiner’s office announced today.
The official cause of Wheeler’s slaying was “blunt force trauma,’’ agency spokesman Karl Kanefsky said about a case that has drawn worldwide media coverage.
Police reiterated today that the case remains under investigation but acknowledge they cannot fill in critical gaps in the murder mystery.
Within hours of the grisly New Year’s Eve discovery, state pathologists had ruled that the 66-year-old New Castle resident was a homicide victim, but until today authorities had been mum on the cause of his death — an unusual posture in Delaware, where such information is usually released promptly.

Google is helpfully mapping the recent reports of animal deaths around the world. Are there reasonable, scientific reasons for all of this? Sure, probably. But that won’t stop us from speculating on a possible link to May 21, 2011 or to ETs. Isn’t that what the Internets are for? : )
