All of Romney's latest ads are lies

Steve Benem went to the Romney campaign’s website and YouTube channel to evaluate their latest ads. The campaign has released six English-language TV ads since the last presidential debate was held. Every ad had one troubling thing in common:

1. The day after the debate, Romney unveiled this spot, accusing the president of having gone on an “apology tour.” The ad was based on a lie.

2. Romney then unveiled a minute-long spot, boasting about his plan to create “12 million new jobs.” The promise has been exposed as completely fraudulent.

3. The next Romney ad accused Obama of shrinking the military to the point that our Navy is now the smallest since 1917. The claim has been exposed as ridiculous.

4. This week, Romney unveiled an ad suggesting Chrysler is moving Jeep jobs to China. It’s an absurd lie.

5. Romney then launched a Pennsylvania-only ad, boasting about how much he loves coal. Romney is also on record saying he believes coal plants kill people.

6. Romney’s latest spot says Obama “gutted the work requirement for welfare.” That’s a lie.

I’m not cherry picking the offensive ads built around falsehoods; I’m merely listing all of the ads Romney has unveiled since the third debate.

Throughout this election, Mitt Romney hasn’t been particularly straightforward with voters about his positions or record, but these ads signal a new low for him. Are the ads a sign of his desperation or is the campaign simply, finally revealing its utter contempt for the American electorate?

He thinks Americans are stupid. Sad part is he’s right about a good deal of us.

Obama calls Romney speech ‘a cow pie of distortion’ – The president said there may be value in Romney’s experience in corporate buyouts, “but it’s not in the White House.” He also noted that the former governor doesn’t talk about his record in Massachusetts. Speaking directly to Iowans, Obama used local lingo to slam Romney: “Governor Romney came to Des Moines last week and warned of a prairie fire of debt,” he said. “But he left out some facts. His speech was more like a cow pie of distortion.” Then he quipped, “I don’t know whose record he twisted the most – mine or his.” — MSNBC

An email campaign endorsed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) launched this week (pictured, below) depicts a rifle pointing at President Barack Obama’s head, and a message about an imaginary “million rifle ban” the president is allegedly seeking to implement. “Death threats against this president are up 400 percent as compared to President Bush,” Ladd Everitt, director of communications for The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, told Raw Story on Thursday. “We are living today in a supercharged, partisan political climate where threats of violence and violent rhetoric are everywhere, and you would think that anyone — anyone, no matter what their political views or disagreements with this president — would have the common sense and decency to not create a banner image for a conspiracy theory-fueled email that shows a gun pointing directly at [the president’s] head, while simultaneously preaching to folks about some ridiculous Obama gun ban that exists only in a fantasy world.” – Raw Story

BEARING FALSE WITNESS:

Santorum Claims California Universities Don’t Teach American History – “I was just reading something last night from the state of California. And that the California universities – I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught.” In fact, of the 10 UC system schools, just one (San Francisco) doesn’t offer American history courses. But that’s because it doesn’t offer any humanities courses at all — it’s a medical school. Meanwhile, Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz all offer numerous American history courses. All require students to take U.S. history before they can graduate.

The Romney campaign’s very first television ad, released this evening, dishonestly presents a 2008 McCain campaign quote as the words of President Obama. The ad features a voice-over of Obama saying “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” Then-candidate Obama indeed said those words, perhaps dozens of times during the closing month of the 2008 campaign. The only problem? Obama was actually quoting the words of a strategist from Sen. John McCain’s campaign.

Roundup: RWNJ Faux Outrageous Outrage of the Day — Jim Hoffa Jr. and Union Thuggery!

TBogg: Pearls Were Clutched. Sphincters Were Clenched – Jimmy Hoffa Jr. makes reference to “son’s-of-bitches” and immediately teabaggers and Republicans and conservatives and rightwing bloggers think he’s speaking specifically about them (guilt? … deeply guarded family secret?  …  mom really was a bitch?) and so they get the vapors and now they are super totally  not going to vote for the black guy.

Oh noes! Not Breitbartoacalypse II?

TPM: No regrets — On calling Republican members of Congress “sons of bitches” in a speech on Monday, Teamsters President James Hoffa tells TPM he would say it all over again.

All fun aside, this is the REAL issue — doctored video and lies:

MMFA – Matt Gertz: Fox Doctors Hoffa Speech To Fabricate Call For Violence — Right-wing bloggers misled by dishonest Fox News video editing are attacking Teamsters President James Hoffa, Jr. for supposedly urging violence against Tea Party activists during a Labor Day speech. Conservatives are also attacking President Obama, who appeared at the event, for “sanctioning violence against fellow Americans” by failing to denounce Hoffa. But fuller context included in other Fox segments makes clear that Hoffa wasn’t calling for violence but was actually urging the crowd to vote out Republican members of Congress.

Charles Johnson: Fox News Deceptively Edits Video to Smear Teamsters Pres. Hoffa — Absolutely blatant lying from Fox — Fox News aired a flat-out dishonest, edited version of Hoffa’s speech, deliberately doctored to remove a crucial point and make it look as though Hoffa was calling for violence and civil war.

See Fox “News” edited clip and ABC News unedited clip

An actual, unedited transcript of Hoffa’s remarks:

We got to keep an eye on the battle that we face: The war on workers. And you see it everywhere, it is the Tea Party. And you know, there is only one way to beat and win that war. The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what? They’ve got a war, they got a war with us and there’s only going to be one winner. It’s going to be the workers of Michigan, and America. We’re going to win that war.

President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. AndPresident Obama, we want one thing: jobs, jobs, jobs… That’s what we’re going to tell him. He’s gonna be … and when he sees what we’re doing here, he will be inspired. But he needs help. And you know what? Everybody here’s got to vote. If we go back, and we keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong.

Hoffa was talking about VOTING OUT the sons of bitches? Oh, my. Obama has a responsibility to tell Hoffa he owes a quarter to the cuss jar – but THAT’S ABOUT IT.

John Cole:

I really like the idea of Politifact fact-checking politicians, but now they are really going in over their head… They are going to need to hire about 1,000 new researchers if they are going to start fact-checking wingnut blogs and even make a dent. Half those researchers could work nonstop fact-checking just Malkin and Hot Air.
